Confidence Forged on the Mat.
Women's self-defense and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training in Oakley, CA — practical, empowering, and built for all experience levels.
WHY BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU
Built for Real-World Defense
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was developed around a single principle — a smaller, less powerful person can defeat a larger attacker through technique, leverage, and positional control. Unlike striking arts, BJJ teaches you to manage, control, and neutralize a threat from the ground — where most real confrontations end up.
Because BJJ relies on leverage and body mechanics rather than speed or strength, it is one of the most practical self-defense systems available to women. You will learn to break grips, escape holds, create distance, and apply submissions — skills that work regardless of size difference.
What the Program Covers
Our Women's Self-Defense program is structured around the BJJ techniques most relevant to real-world situations — taught progressively, with direct coaching from Coach Mark Miller. Whether you're a complete beginner or continuing into the full BJJ curriculum, every class builds practical, repeatable skills.
Escape & Control
Learn to break grips, escape wrist and bear-hug holds, and establish safe distance from an aggressor.
Ground Defense
Develop confidence on the ground — the most common position in real altercations — using BJJ positional control and submissions.
From Beginner to BJJ
Women who want to continue training can seamlessly transition into our adult gi and no-gi programs — the foundation is the same.
THE ENVIRONMENT
Serious Coaching. Zero Intimidation.
A lot of women tell us the same thing before their first class: they want to learn self-defense, but they're not sure what to expect walking into a martial arts gym. We hear that. Growth Mindset Collective is an adult academy — structured, respectful, and focused on genuine skill development.
Ego is not tolerated on our mats. Training partners are coached to communicate clearly, work at your pace, and respect every student's comfort level. Coach Mark has been teaching structured BJJ since 2009, and building a safe, focused training culture is part of the curriculum — not an afterthought.
You will be challenged. You will also feel supported. That combination is the point.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What Women Ask Before Their First Class.
Do I need any experience to join?
None at all. The Women's Self-Defense program is designed specifically for beginners. Every technique is taught from the ground up with direct coaching. No prior martial arts experience is required or expected.
Are there other women training at the academy?
Yes. We have women training at multiple levels — beginners in the self-defense program and experienced practitioners in our adult gi and no-gi classes. You will not be the only woman on the mat.
Is it safe to spar or roll with training partners?
Sparring is introduced gradually and always at a pace you're comfortable with. In the Women's Self-Defense program, the focus is on skill development and controlled drilling. Live training is optional and never pressured.
Can I continue into regular BJJ classes after this program?
Absolutely. Many women use the self-defense program as a foundation and transition directly into our adult gi or no-gi curriculum. The fundamentals are the same — you will be prepared.
