ADULT BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU IN OAKLEY, CA
The Journey Doesn't End After The Beginner Program
For many students, our Adult Beginner Program is where their Jiu Jitsu journey begins.
Our Adult Gi Jiu Jitsu program is where that journey continues.
Once students have developed a foundation in self-defense, positional awareness, escapes, and the major phases of a fight, they transition into our Adult Gi classes to deepen their understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
This is where students begin exploring the art beyond the fundamentals—developing timing, strategy, technical precision, and a deeper appreciation for what makes Jiu Jitsu a lifelong pursuit.
Whether your goal is self-defense, fitness, competition, or personal growth, Adult Gi Jiu Jitsu offers endless opportunities to learn and improve.
FROM SELF-DEFENSE TO THE ART OF JIU JITSU
Our Adult Beginner Program focuses heavily on self-defense and understanding the major phases of a real confrontation.
Students learn how to manage distance, survive difficult positions, escape control, and apply fundamental techniques under pressure.
The Adult Gi Program builds on that foundation.
Here students begin exploring the deeper layers of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:
- Advanced positional concepts
- Guard systems
- Guard passing strategies
- Submission chains
- Timing and sensitivity
- Technical problem-solving
- Competition concepts for interested students
The goal is not simply to learn more techniques. The goal is to develop a deeper understanding of the art itself.
WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art built on the idea that technique can overcome strength, size, and athleticism.
Students learn how to control, escape, sweep, defend, and submit resisting opponents using leverage, timing, and strategy.
Often described as "physical chess," Jiu Jitsu challenges both the body and mind.
Every training session presents new problems to solve and new opportunities to grow.
The result is a martial art that can be practiced for decades while continuously offering new lessons and challenges.

ADULT JIU JITSU FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.

No. Beginners are welcome.
Do I need to complete the Beginner Program first?
Not necessarily. Many students benefit from the Beginner Program, but we'll help determine the best starting point based on your goals and experience.
Am I too old to start?
Not at all. Students begin Jiu Jitsu at all ages.
Do I need to be in shape first?
No. Training helps you build fitness over time.
Is sparring required?
Sparring is an essential part of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a requirement for advancement. Most students ease into live training during their first few weeks as they learn how to train safely and be a good teammate. Once those foundations are in place, sparring becomes a regular part of the learning process. While it can seem intimidating at first, many students quickly discover that it's one of the most enjoyable and rewarding parts of training.
How often should I train?
Training at least two times per week is recommended. The more consistently you train, the faster you'll progress. If your goal is to win the world championships then you would come to every class possible. How often you should train ultimately depends on your goals, with most students finding success somewhere along that spectrum.
