WHAT IS JUDO?
Judo was founded in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano and has become one of the most practiced martial arts in the world.
The word "Judo" means "The Gentle Way."
Built on the principles of maximum efficiency and mutual benefit, Judo teaches students how to use timing, balance, leverage, and technique to overcome larger or stronger opponents.
Today, Judo is an Olympic sport practiced by millions worldwide and serves as the foundation for many modern grappling arts, including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Classes run 60 minutes, three days per week. No uniform required for your first visit — just comfortable athletic wear.
WHY TRAIN JUDO?
Develop Powerful Takedowns
Most grappling matches start standing. Judo teaches students how to safely and effectively bring an opponent to the ground through throws, trips, sweeps, and off-balancing techniques.
Improve Your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Many BJJ practitioners spend years developing their ground game while neglecting the standing position. Judo helps bridge that gap by teaching takedowns, grip fighting, posture control, and balance.
Learn How To Fall Safely
One of the most valuable skills in Judo is learning proper breakfalls (Ukemi). Students learn how to fall safely, reducing injury risk both on and off the mats.
Build Athleticism
Judo develops coordination, balance, mobility, timing, and body awareness while providing a challenging full-body workout.
Train For Life
Unlike many sports that rely heavily on speed and athleticism, Judo rewards technique, timing, and efficiency. Students can continue developing their skills for decades.

YOUR Judo COACH
Meet Your Instructor
Mr. Lucky Chan
Originally from Burma, Mr. Lucky Chan began training Judo because he loved training with friends and was fascinated by the beauty and effectiveness of techniques like Uchi Mata.
Today he is a Second Degree Brown Belt under Kevin Butler at Tri Valley Judo and has competed throughout California, including tournaments in Los Angeles, Fresno, Monterey, San Jose, and Modesto.
Mr. Lucky believes great Judo is built on timing, leverage, and proper mechanics—not strength alone. His classes focus on developing a strong technical foundation that students can apply in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Beyond martial arts, he volunteers within his community through churches, food drives, and youth programs.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE MAT
Growth Mindset Collective runs structured, coached sessions — not open mat chaos. Every class has a plan, every round has purpose, and every student is accountable to the group.
STRUCTURED ROUNDS
Classes follow a consistent format: warm-up, technique instruction, positional drilling, and timed live rounds. You always know what's happening and why.
COACHED SPARRING
Instructors stay on the mat during live rounds — calling corrections, adjusting intensity, and making sure every roll is productive and safe.
EGO-FREE CULTURE
Experienced students are expected to develop newer ones — not dominate them. The mat culture here rewards technical growth, not gym politics.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any experience to start Judo?
No. Our Adult Judo program is beginner-friendly and designed to teach fundamentals from the ground up. You'll learn basic movement, breakfalls, grips, and throws at a pace that matches your experience level.
Am I too old to start Judo?
Not at all. Many adults begin Judo later in life. Classes focus on proper technique, safety, and gradual progression, allowing students of different ages and fitness levels to train successfully.
Is Judo safe?
Safety is a major focus of every class. Students learn breakfalls (Ukemi) before practicing throws, helping them fall safely and confidently. Training is supervised and techniques are introduced progressively.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable athletic clothing is fine for your trial class. If you decide to continue training, we'll help you find an appropriate Judo gi (uniform).
How is Judo different from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Judo places a greater emphasis on standing grappling, throws, trips, and takedowns. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses more heavily on ground fighting and submissions. The two arts complement each other extremely well.
Will Judo help my BJJ?
Absolutely. Judo develops takedowns, grip fighting, balance, posture control, and transitional skills that can significantly improve your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu game.
Do I need to be strong or athletic?
No. Judo is built around leverage, timing, and technique rather than strength alone. Students of all body types can learn and apply Judo effectively.
Will I learn self-defense?
Yes. Judo teaches practical skills such as balance control, takedowns, body awareness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. These skills can be valuable in real-world situations.
Can I compete in Judo?
Yes. Competition opportunities are available for students who are interested. However, competition is completely optional, and many students train solely for fitness, skill development, and personal growth.
How often should I train?
Consistency is more important than intensity. Even training once per week can help you build skills and confidence. Students who train more frequently often see faster progress.
